Act Two - Scene Five

Act Two - Scene 5

Sonya and Henry are in a candlelit bedroom from the Victorian era. On the bed is an ornate purple
bedspread A bright moon shines in from a window behind the bed. Soft music plays in the background. Numerous candles are lit and placed around the room, Sonya and Henry hold hands in front of the bed.

HENRY

Where is this place that you have brought me. Did it belong

to a millionaire industrialist?

SONYA

At one time it belonged to a merchant named Tredwell. Two of

the Tredwell sons were fine customers of mine.

Nobody lives here now but each day hundreds of people walk

through this room and admire it‘s beauty. Henry, have you

know manners. Please remove your boots in the bedroom.

HENRY

             [removing his boots]

Do you come here often?

SONYA

Yes, my dearest Henry. For the most part I observe The visitors who come through. There are many who wonder what it

would be like to spend one night here with their beloved in

this room.  Look at this room, isn’t it exquisite. I

hope you like it here Henry because I am here for you.

HENRY

[interrupts Sonya, puts his finger to her mouth

there's no need to explain.

SONYA

Please my precious, let me finish. From the first time gazed

on you, I could see the pureness of your heart and

the gentleness of your spirit. You are a good and noble man;

perhaps not what I am accustomed to be with and to be

completely honest, I may not even deserve you. I prayed for

someone like you Henry and the Maker brought you to me.

With you I can feel safe and secure and I will cherish

those feeling forever. Do with me whatever you desire for I

am completely yours.

HENRY

[taken aback and nervous. Looks upward]

I am not sure that this is right or even possible. My prayer

has been answered and yet I am not sure. There are many

voices are coming into my head at this moment; my father’s;

Rabbi Levitz. What should I do? Never has anyone told me

what is right and what is wrong in this situation. How can

this be that I am here with you at this moment contemplating

physical love? Jehovah! Here me now. If this is in your

plan and a good and holy thing then give me a sign.

SONYA

[walking to the side and facing the audience]

And who am I to defile this pure man. Is this my final

offence to virtue? What will come of me?

            [Facing Henry]

You are right to walk with fear and trepidation.

Be fearful! You are with a woman who is not pure.

Flee! Flee! Before you are snared into a realm where

unrequited desire brings you to the brink of madness.

HENRY

            [walking to Sonya]

 be still and quiet.

[Runs his hand through her hair]

SONYA

Feel me Henry. Feel my hair. Feel my skin.

[Sonya takes his hand and runs it down her body]

Feel my body. If you have these feelings then it could be a

sign from the Maker.

[her head collapses on his shoulder]

HENRY

            [laughing]

Could it be that we have been here in this bedroom many

times before and have no recollection.

SONYA

            [laughing]

The Gods must be laughing.

HENRY

[taking Sonya to the edge of the bed and
   unbuttons her blouse]

Jehovah has answered me and this what he wills me to do. You

and I will come together in a physical union before our

Maker. We am poised at the precipice joined together by

love. Yahweh has answered my prayers.

SONYA

            [unbuttoning Henry’s shirt]

And mine. Henry, you will be in the embrace of unworldly

woman who submits entirely to your will. And for you, I

will give you my most heartfelt poem.

[Sonya and Henry kiss and fall on the bed]

            [Lights dim]
